Size not only matters, it's crucially important. A properly-fitting bike makes the rider more energy efficient, more confident, much more comfortable and much less prone to strains and stresses on joints and muscles. You wouldn't wear the wrong size shoes, so why ride the wrong size bike?

Kids bikes are a slightly different story; it's a good idea to size a child with the biggest bike they can safely handle, but only if the child is a competent rider and can stand over the frame with clearance.

The other exceptions to the rule are BMX and Jump bikes. BMX bikes are generally all the same size, so one size fits all. Jump bikes are a kind of cross between a BMX and a mountain bike and again are sized small; this is because both these types of bike are meant for "trick" riding, and you need too have as much room between the rider and the bike as possible to allow the bike to travel up while jumping.

The following chart is as accurate as possible and should only be used as a general guide. It's always best to try a bike before you buy it, as not only is everyone different (short body/long legs... long body/short legs...) but frame length differs quite a bit between manufacturers. This means the right size bike for you will only be blissfully obvious when you actually sit on it.

Note:

To use this guide, measure your inside leg in inches, as this is the way most frame and wheel sizes are usually sized.

Frames are sometimes sized Large, Medium, Small, etc, in which case they equate to the following frame sizes:

SMALL = 16" or 17"

MEDIUM = 18" or 19"

LARGE = 20" or 21"

EX LARGE = 22" or 23"
